How is a mirror hung so it cannot fall?
The load decides the fixing. A small pane of four or five kilos will sit on a pair of hooks rated well above that weight; a large silvered plate of twenty kilos or more needs two points of support, one at each side of the frame, and a third at the bottom to stop the whole thing tilting forward when a door slams.
Plasterboard holds almost nothing on its own. A cavity fixing spreads the load behind the board, but the reliable answer is to find the studs with a detector and drive the screws into timber, or to drill into brick and use a sleeve anchor. The rule of thumb in the trade is that the fixing should carry at least four times the weight of the mirror, because a sudden pull is not the same as a steady one.
The wire is the weak point in most domestic hangings. A single strand stretched across the back of a heavy frame pulls the two sides inward and can crack the moulding at the corners. Two short chains or two separate wires, each fixed to its own ring on the frame, keep the pull vertical and spread it. Where the frame is old and the corners are already loose, a mirror plate or a French cleat screwed to the back of the frame distributes the weight along its whole width.
Position matters as much as hardware. A mirror hung on a chimney breast above a working fire will be warmed on one face and cooled on the other, and the silvering will not thank anyone for it. A mirror on an outside wall that takes the morning sun will show every smear, because the light rakes across the surface. Both are reasons to hang a little lower or a little further along the wall than the first instinct suggests.

Why does an old mirror go dark at the edges?
The dark rim on an antique mirror is the silvering failing, not the glass. Mirror makers once laid a thin film of tin and mercury on the back of the pane, sealed with a coat of shellac or paint. That seal is the only thing standing between the metal and the air. Once it cracks, moisture reaches the film, the tin oxidises, and the reflective layer turns grey, then brown, then black.
Edges go first because that is where the seal is thinnest and where the frame meets the glass. Dust settles in the rebate, holds damp, and the damage creeps inward from the border. A mirror that has hung for decades against a cold external wall will show a wider band of decay on that side than on the other.
There is no honest way to reverse it. Resilvering an antique plate means stripping the old film and laying a new one, which destroys the age of the surface and, on a genuinely old piece, most of its value. Conservators generally prefer to stabilise: keep the frame dry, keep the back sealed with a fresh coat of shellac or acid-free board, and stop the process where it stands.
A few dark spots are not a fault to be corrected. They are the record of the object's life, and buyers of period mirrors read them the way collectors read the patina on bronze.
What cleans glass without damaging a frame?
Water first. A soft cloth wrung almost dry, with a drop of washing-up liquid in a bowl of warm water, lifts fingerprints and kitchen film from glass without touching the frame. Work from the top down and turn the cloth often, because grit trapped in the weave will scratch a soft old surface.
Ammonia is the enemy of both silvering and gilding. Most household glass sprays contain it, and it will cloud a failing edge faster than anything else in the cupboard. Vinegar is gentler on glass but still acidic, and it should never be allowed to run into a gilded or painted frame, where it lifts the size and the gold leaf with it.
For the frame itself, a dry brush is usually enough. A soft artist's brush or a shaving brush takes dust out of carved crevices, and a barely damp cloth follows on plain timber. Wax belongs on bare wood, not on gilding, and never on the glass. Water rings on a gilded frame come from exactly this mistake.
When a mirror is moved, the glass should be taped in a cross with low-tack tape before it leaves the wall, and the whole thing carried by the frame, never by the plate. A mirror carried flat, face up, will flex, and a flexed plate can shed silvering along a line that will be visible for the rest of its life.
Keeping a hung mirror straight
A mirror that hangs crooked a week after it was levelled was usually hung on a single point. Two fixings, set level with each other and marked from the frame rather than from the wall, remove the pivot. A small spirit level laid on the top edge of the frame, not on the wall, is the check that matters.
Where the wall itself is out of true, which is common in older houses, a thin packing shim behind one side of the frame will bring the face plumb. The shim is invisible and does nothing to the fixing, but it stops the eye from catching the tilt every time someone walks past.
On a door or a wardrobe, the same logic applies with one addition: the mirror must not be able to swing. A mirror fixed to a door needs a cleat at the bottom as well as hooks at the top, because a slammed door produces a shock load that a single pair of hooks will not survive.
When the wall will not take a fixing
Some walls are simply not load-bearing in the right place: a stud partition with no timber where the mirror needs to go, a chimney breast of soft old brick, a plastered wall over lath. In those cases the answer is a batten. A length of timber screwed across two studs, painted to match the wall, gives a solid line to hang from and spreads the load over a metre instead of a point.
A batten also solves the problem of a heavy mirror on a wall that is not flat. The mirror hangs on the batten, the batten meets the wall, and the gap behind the frame is closed by the frame's own depth. It is not a decorative solution, but it is invisible once the mirror is up, and it is reversible.
For a mirror too heavy for any domestic fixing, the honest answer is a stand or a floor lean against a wall with a restraint strap, which is how large antique plates are shown in museums. The object is not diminished by being supported rather than suspended.
A short routine
Once a year, take the mirror down if it is small enough, dust the back of the frame, check the wire or chain for fraying, and look at the seal around the edge of the glass. Once a month, wipe the face with a damp cloth and dry it with a second cloth. Nothing else is needed, and nothing else is safe.
The rest of the time, the mirror asks only to be left where it is, out of direct sun, away from the fire, and level.
